Security operatives comprising policemen and soldiers on Wednesday took over the premises of South African-owned businesses including Shoprite and MTN in attempts to forestall attacks by angry Nigerians over the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Shoprite, MTN and Stanbic IBTC premises at Effurun near Warri, Asaba and other parts of Delta State were all shut down as at on Wednesday.

WARRI TODAY had earlier reported the shut down of business activities at Shoprite in Effurun and in Asaba area of the state.

It was observed that at least five armour personnel carriers (APC) were stationed at the Delta Mall in Effurun housing the Warri Shoprite with armed soldiers guiding the two entrances of the outlets in the area of the state.

The MTN office along Warri/Effurun road was under lock and key when this reporter visited on Wednesday afternoon with the premises being manned by security operatives.

The situation was not different in Asaba as security agents were sighted keeping watch on the facilities.

Similarly, Stanbic IBTC premises across the state,according to sources were not also opened for businesses.

When contacted, the state police commissioner, Mr Adeyinka Adeleke confirmed the deployment of policemen to protect the facilities, saying that there was no cause for alarm.

Adeleke told WARRI TODAY, “The properties are well protected. Our men are there and there is no cause for alarm. The properties are safe and there is no cause to worry. No one should panic, our men are there to ensure safety.”

The police commissioner, however, warned troublemakers to stay clear of the properties, noting that anyone who tries to cause break down of law and order, will be severely dealt with security operatives.
