Tension As Assembly Members Impeach Cross River Speaker

There was a mild drama on Wednesday at the floor of the Cross River House of Assembly as lawmakers impeached, Hon. Elvert Ayambem, as the speaker of the House.

The removal of Ayambem resulted in fisticuffs among lawmakers as members of the hallowed chamber exchanged punches on the floor of the House.

Motion impeaching Ayambem was moved by Effiom Ekarika, representing Calabar South 1 Constituency, and seconded by Omang Charles Omang, representing Bekwarra State Constituency.

Ayambem represents Ikom 2 State Constituency and was elected Speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly in June 2023.

The removal of the speaker was supported by 17 of the 25 lawmakers that made up the House.

The impeached speaker was accused of misappropriation of funds by his colleagues.
