On Monday October 12, 2020, the Edo State House of Assembly elected Amb. Marcus Onobun as its new speaker. Onobun’s elevation followed the impeachment of the immediate past speaker, Francis Okiye.

Okiye represents Esan North East state constituency in the House. He was impeached during plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Roland Asoro.

Following the development, Onobun, was elected as speaker of the House.

Here are ten things you should know about him:

One:  Marcus Onobun is the speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly. He is currently the youngest speaker in Nigeria. He’s in his late 30s.

Two: Marcus Onobun is a first-timer legislator. He represents Esan West Constituency in the House

Three: He was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general election.

Four: Marcus Onobun hails from Iruekpen, a village in Ekpoma in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Five:  The Edo Assembly Speaker attended the Ambrose Alli University (AAU). He graduated in 2008,

Six: Rt. Hon. Onobun studied Geography and Regional Planning at AAU.

Seven: He was a student leader during his days at AAU from where he began active politics till date.

Eight: Until his elevation as speaker, he was the Deputy Majority Leader.

Nine: He was born in Benin, the Edo State capital, where he had his primary and secondary education.

Ten: He was one of the lawmakers loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki and his then APC faction in the state.
