The Senator representing Delta Central in the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ede Dafinone, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the Urhobo Nation and the people of Udu Kingdom following the passing of His Royal Majesty, Barrister Emmanuel Bethel Otete Delekpe, Owhorhu I, the Ovie of Udu Kingdom.
In a statement on Thursday, Senator Dafinone described the late monarch’s transition as a profound loss not only to Udu Kingdom but to the Urhobo Nation at large.
His Royal Majesty passed away on February 24, 2025, at 86, after 31 years of reign on the throne of Udu Kingdom.
Owhorhu I’s transition was officially announced on Wednesday by High Chief (Sir) Samuelson Esikomunu Odibo, Otota (spokesperson) of Udu Kingdom, on behalf of the Udu Council of Chiefs.
Senator Dafinone praised Owhorhu I’s 31-year reign as a period marked by wisdom, peace, and development.
“His Royal Majesty Owhorhu I was a revered monarch, a legal luminary, and a father figure whose leadership brought remarkable development, cultural pride, and stability to Udu Kingdom,” the Senator said.
He emphasised that the monarch’s legacy of justice, unity, and community service will endure, inspiring future generations. “His legacies will continue to speak for him in the hearts of his people and generations yet unborn,” Dafinone added.
The Senator offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and strength for the royal family, the Udu Traditional Council of Chiefs, and all indigenes of Udu Kingdom during this time of mourning.
His Royal Majesty, Owhorhu I, ascended the throne in 1993 and served as a unifying symbol and custodian of Urhobo culture until his passing.
