Rotary International To Devote More Time To Development In Africa, Targets 95% Polio Eradication


 

 

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has charged Rotary Club International to sustain its global community-based development efforts in the state and Nigeria in spite of the unfriendly global economy.

This is even as Rotary Club International said it remained committed to the eradication of poliomyelitis by targeting 95 per cent eradication rate globally.

 

Oborevwori spoke at the Joint District Conference of District 9141 held in Asaba, Delta State Capital,while charging the charity organisation to continue to serve as an instrument of opportunity for everyone.

The governor, represented by the State Commissioner for Primary Education, Mr Kingsley Ashibogwu, commended Rotary Club for its immense contributions in the areas of health, education and other social services to the state.

He expressed optimism that the organisation would continue “to be an instrument for economic and political opportunity for all”.

“We also want to use this medium as we appreciate you to continue in your good works especially at this moment when we are faced with national challenges in terms of an unfriendly global economy, national challenges in terms of insecurity.

“We also want to appreciate you and hoped that as Rotarians you will continue to use your organisation as a means for more development not only in Delta state in Nigeria as a whole. We hope that your organisation would be an instrument for opportunities for all both economically and politically in Nigeria and Delta state in particular”, Oborevwori stated.

 

In his remark, Rotary International President nominee, Mario Cesar Martins De-Camargo, expressed delight with the growing membership of the non-profit organisation in Nigeria.

 

Camargo, who however, regret the shortfall in the membership of the global charity club in Europe and America, noted that his leadership will review the situation and grow the numbers.

He noted that his leadership would devote more time for development in Africa as well as redoubles the organisation’s efforts at combating poliomyelitis globally by 95% eradication target rate.

Carmago noted that mental health issues occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic will receive focus during his tenure.

Director General, National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Osifo Ojogun,  who was the guest speaker at the event, assured that the next census will be credible, adding that adequate technology will be deployed to ensure accuracy of data generated.
