Rivers’ Emergency Rule: Lagos Police Invite NDC National Spokesman, Ogboru

Lagos State Police PRO SP Benjamin Hundeyin

The Lagos State Police Command has invited the national Spokesman of the Niger Delta Congress (NDC), Comrade Mudiaga Ogboru, for interrogation over the political crisis in Rivers State.

Ogboru’s invitation followed a planned protest by Niger Delta Congress (NDC) to reject the recent declaration of State of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.

NDC, a group representing the unified voice of ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta, had called for protest to demand the reversal of the the emergency rule as well as the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy and members of the state house of Assembly.

The group in the statement signed by Comrade Mudiaga Ogboru on March 23, 2025, rejected and faulted the decision of President Tinubu over the emergency rule in the oil-rich Rivers.

It specifically called on the people of the region to occupy the streets and reject the unpopular proclamation of the President Tinubu in the state.

According to the group, “We call upon the ethnic nations of the Niger Delta particularly in Rivers, Ijaw, Ogoni, Ikwerre, and beyond, to rise and recognize the gravity of this moment. A peaceful Rivers State is vital to the social and economic advancement of our people. The disruption of governance, the resurgence of militancy, and the sabotage of critical infrastructure, such as the recent Trans-Niger Pipeline explosion, threaten to undo decades of hard-won progress toward peace and prosperity. Our communities, already scarred by environmental ruin and economic neglect, cannot endure further chaos.

“The NDC unequivocally condemns this emergency declaration and the suspension of the executive and legislative arms of the Rivers State Government as a flagrant abuse of executive power and a perilous precedent that erodes the sovereignty of our states and the rights of our people. We demand that President Tinubu immediately reverse this decision, reinstate Governor Fubara and the elected assembly, and commit to dialogue over diktat.

“To this end, we call on our people to take to the streets in a peaceful protest against indirect and undemocratic rule in Rivers State.”

However, barely 24 hours after NDC urged the people of the region to resist the emergency rule, the Lagos Police command invited the group’s spokesman over the group’s call for protest.

In a letter of invitation to Ogboru dated March 24, 2025, and sighted to NIGER DELTA TODAY, an assistant commissioner of police in charge of the state intelligence unit, asked NDC spokesman to report at the CID on or before March 25, 2025.

“You are invited to see the Officer in charge S.I.D named Police Station/Post in connection with a case reported on of March, 23rd, 2025.

“It is just a fact finding invitation and your very co-operation will be much appreciated; on arrival please report to. O/C S.I.D of the S. I.D Office, Ikeja, Lagos.

“Looking forward to seeing you on or before 25TH March, 2025. 11:00am”, the invitation letter signed by an ACP added.
