A policeman who is yet to be identified by the authorities of Akwa Ibom State Police Command has allegedly shot dead a man at a wedding in Ikot Ukab, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of the state.
The state governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, was reportedly present at the wedding where the incident occurred.
The victim was identified as Godwin Thomas.
It was not yet known as the time of filling this report what might have let to the killing of the victim.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko MacDon, a Superintendent of Police (SP) who confirmed the incident, maintained that the trigger-happy police officer was yet-to-be identified.
According to the statement signed by the MacDon, the state commissioner of police, Zaki Ahmed had directed that a discreet investigation be carried out on the unfortunate incident.
According to it, “Our preliminary findings showed that as at the time of the incident, the security personnel from Akwa Ibom Government House had left the area.
“There were police personnel from within the state and neighbouring states on escort duties.
“While the identity of the perpetrator of this dastardly act is for now, unknown, the Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed has ordered for a more discreet investigation to be quickly carried out to unravel the perpetrator of the said crime and prosecute same.”

Meanwhile, state government has said Governor Emmanuel was “deeply saddened” about the killing of Mr. Thomas.
Commissioner for Information, Sir Charles Udoh, described the killing as a “tragic event at the end of an otherwise joyous occasion.”
According to him, “it was an unwarranted loss of an innocent life and that the governor has directed security agencies to fish out and prosecute the killer.”
“While commiserating with the family of the deceased, the governor reiterates his administration’s commitment to the continued protection of lives and property within the boundaries.”
