Police Release Delta Journalist, Joe Ogbodu On Bail

Joe Ogbodu, the Managing Editor of an online medium, BIGPEN Online, who was invited by the Delta State Police Command on Wednesday, has been released on bail.

The State Police Command had invited Ogbodu for questioning following a petition brought against him by one of the leaders of the community over a report published on the medium concerning the crisis rocking the Isoko community.

NIGER DELTA TODAY reliably learnt that the journalist was grilled for several hours by police operatives at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Asaba, the state capital.

Upon his arrival at the State Police Command, Ogbodu made a statement to the police before he was taken into a room for further interrogation.

His grilling took several hours.

Ogbodu, who was accompanied by top journalists in the state including the state council chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), was granted bail on Wednesday evening.

He was, however, asked to report at the State Police Headquarters, Asaba, on Thursday by 8am.

When contacted, the BIGPEN Online Managing Editor confirmed that he has been released on bail.

He declined to give further details on why the police invited him.

This medium had earlier reported Ogbodu’s invitation by the police.

The State Police Command had also similarly invited a popular journalist and social critic, Mr Amour Udemude for questioning only to be later released on bail over the same report on the community crisis.

The two journalists are being questioned over their reports on the brewing crisis in Uzere community in Isoko South Council Area of the state where it was alleged that some youths unleashed mayhem in the community over N20million oil largesse which recently came to the oil-rich community.
