Police in Ebonyi State Monday arrested Ebonyi council chairman and a lawmaker over a cult clash that erupted in Edda, Afikpo South local government area of the State which left at least one person dead.
The State Commissioner of Police, Awoshola Awotinde, confirmed the arrest on of the duo on phone to our correspondent.
Awotinde explained that they were arrested for interrogation.
He said the chairman of Afikpo South LGA, Mr. Eni Uduma Chima, alongside two other stakeholders including member representing Afikpo South East state constituency, Hon. Chidi Ejem and another prominent stakeholder were arrested over Sunday night rival cult clash in the state.
According to him, the arrest was as a result of cult clashes in Asaga, Owutu Edda, in the LGA which had one person popularly known as Dunk killed.
He said, “Yes, there was a clash in Afikpo South, we have arrested the chairman of the local government, one House of Assembly member representing the area, and another person.
“We have dispatched our men there to ensure peace return, and we are still investigating the matter”.
Source alleged that the State Local Government Auditor General, George Upkai, was also arrested as the clash took place in his community.
Source from the locality alleged that the clash was politically motivated.
The source said that many persons were injured while a youth popularly known as Dunk was found dead in the morning.
However, Ebonyi chief said SARS operatives have already been deplored to the community to restore peace and forestall further clashes in the locality.
