Outrage has trailed the donation of a borehole otherwise known as ‘Jacking Pump’ by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Delta State, Hon. Peter Mrakpor to Iwhrekan Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.
The borehole project is believed to be the only project the commissioner was able to attract to Iwhrekan community since he was appointed as commissioner, over three years ago by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.
Iwhrekan community is one of the host communities to the Otorogu Gas Plant, the biggest gas plant in West Africa. The community also play host to several oil wells and other facility.
Residents of the community, who drew the attention of WARRI TODAY to the project after its completion, lamented that successive governments both at the state and federal have practically abandoned the community.
A source close to the commissioner told our correspondent that the water project was the only project the commissioner could boast of having occupied the position in the last three years.
The commissioner was said to have also donated similar project to other communities that made up the Jeremi Ward 1 & 3.
Iwhrekan currently lacks roads and other basic amenities. The Okowa government has also abandoned the Technical College built in the community by the administration of former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.
The community also suffers from epileptic power supply by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
Iwhrekan community youth president, Gideon Arhavwarien, also took to Facebook to celebrate the borehole project by the commissioner.
Arhavwarien had in his Facebook post said, “This water project was done by the Commissioner for Justice, Hon Peter Mrakpor to Iwhrekan community. We the entire youth of iwhrekan, being led by. Comr Gideon Arhavwarien as the youth president, we say thank you to Hon Peter Mrakpor Commissioner for Justice Delta state.”
