Students of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, are currently protesting against the N5,000 COVID-19 levy imposed on students by management of the institution.

NIGER DELTA TODAY (NDT) Online reports that the students have taken over the institution’s gate and lock the main entrance into the school.

It was gathered that the protest commenced at about 7am on Friday.

The polytechnic has imposed N5,000 levy on all students returning for the 2019/2020 academic session over the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The school in a circular last week directed students to pay the levy for COVID-19 to enable authorities prepare for their health and safety as students return to school.

The protesting called on the management of the polytechnic to immediately rescind the levy in the interest of peace.

They also called on the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to prevail on the school to halt the collection of the levy.

The protesting students described the said levy extortion and unlawful since they had registered for the 2019/2020 academic session.

The protest is still on at the time of filing this report.
