The Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oharisi 111, has advocated for peace and unity among his subjects, promising to continue to promote ideas that will advance the peace and the rich cultural heritage of the Ughelli people.
Oharisi 111 also charged Ughelli sons and daughters to use their privileged positions in their various field of endeavours to develop the kingdom.
The monarch spoke at the first annual conference and award ceremony of Ughelli Descendants Union (UDU) after 22 years held at the Ughelli Kingdom Hall opposite Oharisi Primary School in the city of Ughelli, Delta State.
Represented by the Otaota (Traditional Prime Minister) of Ughelli, the revered Ughelli monarch called for a concerted effort in sustaining peace, unity and progress in the kingdom.
UDU is the umbrella body of Ughelli communities in Delta State with the Ovie of Ughelli as their paramount ruler.
The conference and award ceremony was organised by the Olorogun Sam Akpimegi-led Ughelli Descendants Union (UDU) attracted who-is-who in Ughelli Kingdom including businessmen/women and politicians.
In his address, President-General of UDU, Olorogun Akpimegi, thanked indigenes of the kingdom for turning out enmasse for the ceremony and for their support for the executive of Ughelli Descendants Union.
He expressed happiness that the conference and award ceremony which was halted twenty-two years ago has once again been held, attributing it to their cooperation and prayers of the people.
Akpimegi said the ceremony afforded the people of Ughelli the opportunity to rub minds on how to move the kingdom forward and sustain its prevailing peace as a central and conference city in the southern part of the country
Chairman of Ughelli North Local, Olorogun Jaro Egbo and the Chairman of the ceremony, Olorogun Andrew Oru, represented by Chief Fred Majemite, said the event was a step in the right direction and appealed to the Executive of Ughelli Descendants Union to work out modalities for awarding scholarships to indigent students of Ughelli origin.
In a lecture, former Delta State Chief Judge, Retired Justice Marshal Mukoro gave a roadmap on ways to harness the strengths of the youths and direct them into meaningful ventures.
Retired Justice Mukoro called on the political class and members of UDU to engage in empowering the youths by providing them educational opportunities or vocational training to make them useful to the society.
On the present state of Ughelli, Retired Justice Mukoro called for a collaborative effort in taking Ughelli to it’s rightful place.
A member of the Constitution Review Committee of Ughelli Descendants Union, Olorogun Felix Oberiko and others hailed the Executive of Ughelli Descendants Union led by Olorogun Sam Akpeimegi for organizing such a programme aimed at bringing all together to decipher ways of moving the kingdom forward.
Awards were presented to deserving individuals during the event.
