One Injured, Documents Destroyed As Fire Razes Delta NYSC Offices In Asaba

At least one person has been critically injured after an early morning inferno on Tuesday razed a section of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) offices at the Federal Secretariat in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

It was gathered that the victim who is now receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba was one of the fire fighters drafted to put out the fire.

The said victim whose name could not be immediate ascertained was said to have fell from the second-floor while trying to put out the raging fire.

It was further learnt that NYSC documents and other valuables in the affected offices were completely destroyed as workers who resumed duties early on Tuesday scampered for safety.

The fire which started from the NYSC section of the Second-Floor began at about 6:55am.

At the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire has not been ascertained but sources at the secretariat blamed the unfortunate incident on power surge.

It was also gathered that aside documents at the offices, property worth several millions of naria were razed in the process.

Meanwhile, Delta State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Olutayo Samuel, confirmed the incident on Tuesday in Asaba.

She lamented that everything in the NYSC section of the Federal Secretariat were completely destroyed.

Mrs Olutayo stated, “What happened this very early morning is very unfortunate. I got a call that our office was on fire this morning and I quickly rushed here. I don’t know how fire gutted the office. Nobody can ascertain what exactly the cause of the fire.

“Everything here got burnt, everything in the office got damaged. All the documents bunt to ashes but we have back-up. You know this is technology age, so everything is in our system.

“Coincidentally, we took some of our system to the camp and they are still in the camp, so there will be no set back because we have them in our system.

“I cannot cost it now but it is a colossal damage. But by the Grace of God, there is no life lost because that is the most important thing. I feel good because whatever damage will be replaced but if life had lost, we couldn’t have replaced it.”
