There was pandemonium on Sunday night at Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State when a speeding truck reportedly crushed a commercial motorcyclist popularly known as okada rider and a female passenger to death.

The incident, our correspondent learnt, led to protest by okada riders in the area as they block the PTI Junction in Effurun resulting in traffic gridlock.

It was gathered that the accident occurred near the popular Osubi Slaughter Market about 9pm on Sunday.

The two victims were said to have died on the spot.

The truck driver was said to have absconded for the fear of being lynched by sympathizers who rushed to the scene of the accident.

A tricycle rider who witnessed the incident said “You know how these trailer drivers are, driving like they are the only ones on the road. He was on high speed and it was already dark. Before he saw the bike, it was too late. The people died on the spot, while the driver ran away.”

Following the development, motorcyclists bearing leaves on their motorbikes have protested the death of their colleague.

The Okada riders who caused traffic jam along the PTI/DSC Expressway axis of the East West Road demanded that the driver of the truck be fished out and the law should take its course.

The Delta state police Command could not confirm the development at the time of filing this report as the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Onome Onowakpoyeya could not be reached for official response.
