Kogi West: Why INEC Declared Dino Melaye, Adeyemi’s Election Inconclusive

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the rerun senatorial election in Kogi West inconclusive.

It said a new date for a supplementary election will be announced for the 53 polling units that were greeted by violence and election could not hold during Saturday’s election.

Senators Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Smart Adeyemi are the key contenders in the election.

Senator Adeyemi of the APC is currently leading with 80,118 votes, while Senator Melaye of the PDP polled 59,548.

The Returning Officer (RO), Prof. Olayide Lawal declared the Senatorial election as inconclusive and that supplementary election will be conducted.

Lawal explained that the supplementary election would be conducted in 53 polling units and 46,127 registered voters.

The electoral commission is yet to fix date for the election.

The Appeal Court had nullified the election of Senator Melaye and ordered for a rerun election in the Kogi senatorial district.
