The Delta State Government has approved Tuesday September 8 (tomorrow) as resumption date for students in Junior Secondary School three across the state.
Schools in Delta had remained locked since March 2020 as parts of efforts aimed at containing the spread of the dreaded coronavirus pandemic in the state.
Delta has recorded 1,768 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,603 patients discharged while 48 persons have died from contracting the disease and 117 cases currently undergoing treatment.
However, the state government in a statement signed by the commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chief Patrick Ukah, confirmed the reopening of schools for students in JSS 3 classes.
Ukah in the statement issued on Sunday noted that the resumption was in line with the state government’s phase reopening of schools beginning with certificate classes.
He stressed that the state government would strictly monitor adherence to COVID-19 protocols including the wearing of facemasks and use of sanitizers by staff and students.
The statement noted that to this effect, a five-man monitoring team had been constituted in each council to monitor and enforce coronavirus regulations in schools.
Ukah said, “JS 3 students are to immediately begin revision lessons for their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) organised by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education scheduled to begin on Monday, September 21, 2020.”
He advised school principals to ensure that all COVID-19 protocols put in place during the earlier resumption of SS 3 students were maintained to avoid the spread of the dreaded disease among the students.
Mr. Ukah stressed that he and other officials from the ministry, in addition to those from the state Post Primary Education Board (PPEB), will monitor the resumption of the students.
The commissioner, however, cautioned students in other classes to stay away from schools as the date for resumption for other classes will be made public at the appropriate time.
