INEC Declares PDP’s Douye Diri Winner Of Bayelsa Governorship Poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Douye Diri as the winner of the Saturday’s governorship election.

Diri, who is the incumbent governor, defeated his closest rival and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC),  Timipre Sylva.

The Returning Officer, Prof Faruq Kuta, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Of Technology, Minna, announced Diri winner of the poll at the collation centre in Yenagoa, the state capital, on Monday.

Diri polled 175,196 to defeat APC’s Sylva who scored 110,108 votes while the Labour Party’s Udengs Eradiri, scored 905 votes to come a distant third in the fiercely contested governorship poll.

The governor won in six out of the eight local government areas including in Yenagoa, Kolokuma-Opokuma, Sagbama, Ekeremor, Ogbia, and Southern Ijaw, while Sylva won in Brass and Nembe local government areas.

But the agent of the APC, Dennis Otiotio, said his party would not sign the result sheet because the party’s over 84,000 collated votes were cancelled by INEC at the commission’s office.
