Why Dumped APC For PDP –  Delta North APC Chairman

By Onome Oghenetega

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State on Thursday threw punches at the senator representing Delta North senatorial district at the National Assembly, Mr. Peter Nwaoboshi, over the lawmaker’s verdict on his administration’s performance in the last six years.

Okowa, who accused Senator Nwaoboshi of trying to cause confusion and division within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), told the lawmaker that it was only a blind person that would claim that his administration had not performed.

Nwaoboshi, a former state chairman of PDP in Delta, last week lambasted Governor Okowa’s administration of failing to develop the state and scored him of performing below average compare to his predecessors – former Governors James Ibori and Emmanuel Uduaghan.

The lawmaker, who is the chairman Senate committee on NDDC and Niger Delta Affairs, also accused Okowa of attempting to truncate the rotational formula between the three senatorial districts which produced him as governor in 2015.

Following the verbal attack on the Delta governor, the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday announced the suspension of Nwaoboshi for one month after an emergency meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC).

But Governor Okowa speaking at the defection of the Delta North Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief George Okafor and some other APC members from Aniocha and Oshimili Federal Constituency in Asaba, said it was only the lawmaker that cannot see his developmental strides across the state particularly in Asaba.

The governor, who did not mention the lawmaker’s name, said Nwaoboshi had always fought him, and recalled how supporters of the of the senator attempted to scuttle the senatorial primaries of the PDP in 2011 where he emerged as the candidate of the party.

Okowa emphasised that his administration is building on the solid foundation laid by the administrations of former governors Ibori and Uduaghan, whom he claimed worked hard to develop the state.

“If somebody says he doesn’t see what we are doing, it means either the person is blind or he doesn’t come to Asaba. For those who want to play politics and cause division and even cause quarrel between me and predecessors won’t work. I don’t have issues with our former governors. If somebody laid a foundation, you build on it.

“I’m building on the foundation laid by my predecessors. The foundation had been laid by Ibori and followed by Uduaghan and I am building on the foundation they left. No stranger can cause a misunderstanding between me and the former governors. No stranger can deceive us in Delta State. My strength is in God but God has used you to support and pray for me.

“With our brothers and sisters who have come to join us, God has added more strength. I thought they will ask us with what we are doing, where is the money coming from. With your support and prayers, the money is coming and we doing our best gradually. By the grace of God, by the time we finish our tenure in 2023, the people will happy with us and I will be happy with the people.

“I am happy that everybody is on board in PDP. Together, we shall win Delta in 2023 and reclaim the presidency. I don’t want to compare what PDP is doing and what their party (APC) is doing. Everybody is seeing and hearing what we everybody is doing. Every member of our party should take the message to our villages so that we can drive APC from Delta completely.

“I remember in January 2011 in this same venue, we were doing senatorial election, some people came to scuttle the exercise but God did not allow them. They jumped through this fence. What he did before, he wants to do it again but he can’t. God is on the throne. Tell him to fear God. We are confident in what we are doing, he can’t distract us.

“We shall continue to work together. We shall continue to develop Asaba. As we develop Asaba, we will develop the whole Delta State. As a person, I don’t discriminate. We need your prayers; I don’t believe Governor Okowa and his deputy (Otuaro) can do it alone”, Governor Okowa stated.

The governor insisted that it was only God that will determine who will emerge as his successor in the 2023 governorship election.

“We are a party that believes that God does exist and that’s why we rejoicing in his presence. We are also a party that believes that power belongs to the people and the people have the rights to make their choices. That’s why one day I said power belongs to God, and it’s only God that will determine who will succeed me. Did I not say it?

“As I said, some people are angry. I don’t know why they’re angry. All power belongs to God. It’s only God who knows who will take over from me. All of us in PDP are one family but those who don’t have it character are angry because I said the truth.

“They are trying to scatter our family (PDP). Our family is too solid to scatter. That’s why I am here to greet all our people who returned back home.  I thank all the returnees. You’re welcome home.

Promises To Tell Deltans Why Nwaoboshi Is Angry

“When we work hard, we worked hard for every one of us. We don’t work hard one individual pocket because the day I will speak the truth that’s making somebody to be angry is coming. As a governor, you voted for me to do what is right for the people, and not to go and put money in somebody’s pocket.

“We’ll do what you voted me to do. We are very happy that our brothers have returned to join us. As the state party chairman has said, we are one. It’s the party you left; you have returned. There’s no discrimination in PDP family. So, we should all join hands to ensure that the whole of Delta North, Delta Central and Delta South become PDP.

“PDP has worked. Starting from the time of James Ibori, PDP worked very well. It got to the time of Emmanuel Uduaghan, he worked very hard, and now, in my time, we are working because you support me”, he added.

Why Dumped APC For PDP –  Delta North APC Chairman

Meanwhile, State Vice Chairman of APC, Delta State Caretaker Committee, Chief Okafor, has said he dumped the opposition APC owing to the unending crisis in the state chapter of the party.

Okafor, a retired military major, who led other APC to join the ruling PDP, said, “I have tender my resignation from the position of Chairman, APC Delta North Caretaker Committee effective from Wednesday, June 22, 2021;  and by this notice, I also want to denounce my membership of the APC henceforth.

“My decision to quit the party is borne from inner convictions that Delta APC has remained an unending battlefield without hope for respite.

“However, I thank the party for providing me with the platform to serve and render civic obligations to my country.

“My return to the PDP after a sabbatical seven years in the opposition party, I would say, is an act of divine intervention.”
