The Federal Government on Friday said it has revoked the operational licenses of 52 television and radio stations across the country including the first private radio station in Delta State, Radio Jeremi in Effurun city.
Also revoked by the government is the licenses of Bayelsa State Broadcasting Corporation operator of Bayelsa Televsion, Silverbird TV, Rhythm FM, AIT/RayPower FM, and MITV.
The Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in a statement ordered the affected stations to “shut down their operations” within the next 24 hours.
NBC, Nigerian government’s agency saddled with the responsibility of controlling licensed broadscasting stations, said the affected stations’ licenses were revoked because they stations failed to renew their licenses as required by law.
It explained that the commission had earlier given two weeks ultimatum to the affected stations to renew their licenses but they failed.
“Three months after the publication, some licensees are yet to pay their outstanding debts,” NBC’s statement partly read.
