A Federal lawmaker, Hon. Julius Pondi, has expressed confidence that a woman would one day become president of Nigeria.
Pondi who represents Burutu Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, stated this at the unveiling and launching of Congress newspaper at Bon Hotel, Ekpan in Uvwie council area of Delta state, Friday.
The lawmaker who was the chairman of the occasion, was responding to a question on the possibility of a female ruling the country.
Emphasizing his support for females to hold top political positions in Africa’s most populous nation, he disclosed that he voted in favour of women in four bills that were rejected in National Assembly last Tuesday.
Recall that five bills which sought to promote more opportunities for women in governance were quashed by the lawmakers.
Pondi stated, “I strongly believe that a woman will one day become the president of this country. In fact, in the recent constitution review at the National Assembly, I voted in favour of the women in four different bills.
“Unfortunately, my votes were quashed by the majority. However, I am hopeful that women will perform optimally if given seats of power”.
Speaking on the unveiling of the newspaper, the legislator harped on the need for the Niger Delta story to be told by its people.
“We are a very peculiar people in peculiar times. Nobody can tell our story better. We are a very fine people with a unique way of doing things, so we need to tell the story of where we are, where we are heading and where we are coming from. We can only tell that story if we are willing,” Pondi said.
In his speech, the publisher of Congress newspaper, Comrade Austin Ozobo, said that their vision is to be a voice for the oppressed.
He said that the online operations of the newspaper began in July last year, adding that the medium has within the short time, gained thousands of readership across the world due to its objective and fair reportage.
