The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Tuesday announced that one of its facilities in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 40 has been hit by an explosion leading to the destruction of its storage vessel.

The facility operated by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), an upstream subsidiary of NNPC.

NPDC partners – Elcrest Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited – were carrying out production evacuation at Gbetiokun Early Production facility when the incident occurred.

A statement by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Dr. Kennie Obateru, stated that there were no fatalities or injuries and no significant spill in the incident.
