Ex-Bayelsa Deputy Gov’s In-law, Two Others Shot Dead By Gunmen

An in-law of Hon. Peremobowei Ebibi, a former Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Niceman Agonebi and two others have been reportedly shot dead by rampaging gunmen around Custom Road in Yenagoa, the state capital.

Agonebi, popularly known as Honourable, and the other victims were killed by the gunmen in what sources claimed to be cult attack on Monday night at a local drinking spot in the state capital.

Five other persons including a female owner of the bar also sustained life threatening gunshot wounds during the incident.

It was gathered that the 50-year-old in-law of the former deputy governor and other victims were relaxing at the spot when the gunmen struck.

Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, had been under cult attacks lately with several persons reported to have been killed from similar melees.

Our correspondent gathered that the owner of the relaxation spot, Madam Odey, had her jaw pieced by the hoodlums’ stray bullets.

Sources in the area to NIGER DELTA TODAY Online on Tuesday that the gunmen numbering four stormed the location in a tricycle shooting sporadically on customers at about 8pm.

The hoodlums were said to have escaped through Edepie/Tombia route when security operatives comprising of the men of the State Police Command and State Vigilante Service and State Volunteer teams launched a reprisal attack on them.

The Acting Chairman of the State Vigilante Service, Hon. Doubiye Alagba, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.

Alagba stated that the state government has gathered useful information on the activities of the rival cult groups involved in the killings and will ensure they are brought to book.

Also confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat, said the command had already launched a manhunt for the fleeing gunmen.
