The Speaker Anambra State House of Assembly, Uche Okafor, has called for the restructuring of the Nigeria Police to end police brutality in the country.
He made the call in Awka, the state capital.
Our correspondent reports that the Speaker acknowledged that some bad individuals in the Police have derailed from the cardinal objectives of setting up the Nigeria Police, which is to maintain peace and order in the country in addition to the protection of life and property.
The lawmaker however appealed to the #EndSARS protesters not to resort to violence to achieve their demands but to give peace a chance by allowing the state government look into their demands.
The Speaker made it clear that the House is in support of the protest aimed at restructuring the Police and commended Governor Willie Obiano for the mature and humane manner he has continued to handle the protesters in the State by sacking the former Officer in Charge of the disbanded SARS in Awkuzu, Mr. James Nwafor his Senior Special Assistant on Security and releasing those that were detained unlawfully as well as setting up a panel to look into the issues raised by the EndSars protesters.
The Speaker who regretted that the protest by Nigeria youths has degenerated to something else assured that the present Anambra State House of Assembly, made up of mostly youths will always resolve on those issues that will guarantee a bright future and quality of life for the youths.
Later, the House observed a minute silence in honour of those who died in the ongoing “EndSars” protest by the youths.
Right Honourable Okafor also apologized to Ndi Anambra for inability of Governor Willie Obiano to appear before the House to present the 2021 appropriation bill owing to the pressing need to address security concerns, adding that a new date will be communicated to the people.
Also, at plenary the House confirmed the re-appointment of five Transition Committee members of Idemili North Local Government Area whose re-appointments were stepped down during the last plenary.
