The Delta State Government on Tuesday assured that the Asaba division of the Court of Appeal will commence sitting (operation) before February next year.
The assurance is coming on the heels of approval by the State Executive Council (SEC) for the construction of official residence for judges of the Court of Appeal.
Addressing Government House reporters in Asaba on the outcome of the SEC meeting presided over by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu said the Maryam Babagida House will be restructured to serve the purpose.
Recall that previously, those appealing the judgment of the lower courts had to go to the Benin division of the Court of Appeal in neighbouring Edo State to exercise their legal rights.
The Federal Government had earlier approved the Asaba division of the appellate court with a team of inspectors from Abuja coming to inspect facilities two months ago.
According to Aniagwu, for the Asaba division to take off, “we have to provide residential accommodation for the judges here in Asaba. And, for that purpose, we are restructuring the Maryam Babangida House, just off Maryam Babangida Way, Asaba.
“The good thing is that we are going to have a Court of Appeal Judicial Division, Asaba.”
He said the council also approved the “installation of a Diokpa for the people of Umute in Aniocha South Local Government Area, subject to the custom and tradition of Umute people. And, his name is Fidelis Chukwujindu Ifeyenem.”
Also approved is the construction of a technical college in Uvwie Local Government Area to bring the number of recently technical colleges nine out of the 19 promised by the governor during the electioneering campaigns
