A trailer conductor has reportedly slumped and died after he was hit on the head by a now fleeing ‘Inspector’ attached to the Department of Produce, Ministry of Agriculture Delta State.

The incident, it was gathered, occurred on Friday around the Agbor-Asaba section of the busy Benin/Onitsha Highway in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

It was learnt that the fleeing ‘inspector’ and other officials were mounting road block when an altercation ensued between the officials and the late conductor which later degenerated to physical confrontation.

The suspect was said to have hit the deceased’s head with a wood when the trouble ensued and immediately the Delta official knew the enormity of the crime he had committed fled the scene.

The deceased was pronounced dead by doctors at the Onicha-Olona General Hospital.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed the incident saying that the command had launched manhunt for the fleeing suspect.

According to a statement signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, explained that the fleeing ‘inspector’ and other of his colleagues from the Delta State Ministry of Agriculture were on inspection duty when the incident took place.

“Today being 5/7/2019, men suspected to be from the department of produce, Ministry of Agriculture Delta State, while on inspection duty along the Asaba/Benin express road stopped a Mack trailer with Reg. T0093YB, blue in colour.

“During an altercation, one of the inspectors hit the conductor of the trailer on the head, who subsequently slumped.

“The conductor was immediately rushed to Onicha-Olona General Hospital where he was confirmed dead by the Medical Doctor”, Onovwakpoyeya in the statement added.

While stressing that effort was already being made to arrest the fleeing suspect, the statement described the mounting of road block by the officials as illegal particularly on the highways.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Adeyinka Adeleke, has commiserated with the family of the deceased.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Adeyinka Adeleke is using this medium to warn the general public to always conduct their affairs with civility at all times while commiserating with the family of the deceased”, Onovwakpoyeya further added.
