There was pandemonium on Friday in the commercial city of Ughelli, Delta State, when suspected armed robbers attacked a customer at the premises of United Bank of Africa (UBA).
NIGER DELTA TODAY Online gathered that the gunmen had trailed the unidentified customer to the bank premises and shot sporadically before attacking their target.
The customer was yet to enter inside the banking hall when the gunmen struck and made away with three “Ghana Must Go” bags containing money.
It was gathered that the bank private security guard and two others were shot by the gunmen who arrived the bank premises with a Toyota Venza.
The gunmen said to be numbering five were armed with sophisticated ammunition and operated unchallenged before leaving the bank premises.
The incident caused panic among customers and residents of Isoko Road in Otovwodo in Ughelli.
The spokesman of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident when he was contacted.
According to Edafe, “A bank customer was double-crossed before he could get to the bank. It’s not a bank robbery.”
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up around the bank as a team of soldiers, policemen and other sister agencies were sighted stationed at the bank premises and other adjoining roads in the city of Ughelli.
It was also observed that many shop owners around Upper Agbarho Junction along the Isoko Road have shut their businesses for the day.
