Following an exclusive report by NIGER DELTA TODAY Online, the governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved 15 hectares of land for the establishment of the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Kwale.
The governor also approved that the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences could commence academic activities from the former Kwale campus of the School of Marine Technology.
NIGER DELTA TODAY Online, the region’s most authoritative online newspaper, had reported that there are strong indications that the Federal Government may revoke the establishment of the specialised university if the Delta State Government fails to provide land.
NDT also reported that some powerful politicians from other states of the South-South are already scheming for the school to be moved to their states if the state government was not willing to release land to Federal Government for the school.
This medium also reported that Delta might lose the university if the state government fails to provide land for the school within the next three months.
The University was among the new higher institutions approved in May 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari and reaffirmed by his successor, President Bola Tinubu in October this year.
The specialised university meant to be located across the six geopolitical zones, the slot for South-South was given to Delta State through the effort of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the immediate past Deputy Senate President, who facilitated the location of the institution to Kwale, Delta North Senatorial District of the state.
But acting swiftly on the report, Governor Oborevwori, on Friday, approved provision of take off site for the Federal medical university.
The State Commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development, Chief Emamusi Obiodeh announced the Governor’s approval to journalists in Asaba on Friday.
According to the Commissioner, the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences take-off site is the place previously used by the School of Marine Technology, Kwale.
The Governor has approved 15 hectares of land, including all facilities and infrastructure previously used by the Delta State School Marine Technology, Kwale campus which has moved to their permanent site.
The new university will operate from this take-off site pending when they move to their permanent site of 100 hectares at Umuseti-Kwale.
The Commissioner said Governor Oborevwori appreciated the Federal Government for the choice of Delta State for this all important specialised university.
He expressed the State Government’s preparedness to partner with the Federal Government, and any other serious investors with capacity that is ready to invest in the state.
The Commissioner said Governor Oborevwori has directed him to provide land to investors who are ready to partner with the state with viable developments that will impact the lives of Deltans and other Nigerians.
