Anxiety As Chevron Debunks Alleged Case Of Coronavirus In Escravos Facility

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) on Friday debunked social media reports that a suspected case of Coronavirus otherwise known as COVD19 has been recorded in its Escravos facility in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The multinational oil company, however, confirmed that one of its employees, an expatriate in the company’s Escravos operation, who was recently monitored over flu-like symptoms has tested negative to the Coronavirus.

In a statement issued on Friday by its General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Mr. Esimaje Brikinn, said it was untrue for anyone to speculate that one of its staff had contracted the infection.

NIGER DELTA TODAY Online learnt on Friday morning that there was panic among staff of CNL at its Escravos operation following an alleged suspected case of an outbreak of Coronavirus.

The situation, according to sources, created anxiety leading to temporary shutting down of operations.

But Brikinn in the statement said CNL was taking all precautions to safeguard the health of employees in line with the directive of the World Health Organisation and other health institutions in the country.

The statement read, “Chevron continues to monitor the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak around the world and has been utilizing the guidance of international and local health authorities. We are regularly updating our workforce and will continue to adjust plans as appropriate as we receive more information.

“Our top priority is to ensure the health and safety of our workforce andtheirfamily members, and we are taking precautionary measures to reduce the risk of exposure.”

It explained that CNL is actively responding to the outbreak of the disease and is taking preventive meansures through daily temperature checks, issuance of travel advisory to its staff and other stakeholders doing business with the company.

“CNL confirms that one of its employees, an expatriate in the company’s Escravos operation, who was recently monitored over flu-like symptoms has tested negative to the Coronavirus.

“Chevron is actively responding to the COVID-19 (Corona Virus) outbreak. Some of the preventive measures in CNL include: Daily temperature screening at the entry points to our offices and field locations, issuance of travel advisory to guide all rotational/business and personal travels, pre-embarkation screening, more utilization of non-face to face meeting tools and minimizing inviting external parties to CNL’s office”, the statement added.

He, however, added that advisory on simple personal hygiene measures, like regular washing of hands, covering cough and sneezes, are shared with the CNL workforce as safeguards for protecting themselves and their families in these times.
