In line with the directive of the Federal Government, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Delta State has shutdown its ongoing orientation camp and had dispatched corps members to their primary place of assignments (PPAs).
The management said they had to complied with the directive of the Director General of the scheme, Shuaibu Ibrahim, to shut orientation camps over Covid-19 concerns.
It was learn that the about 2,500 corps members who reported to the orientation camp for the 2020 batch ‘A’ service year, were still undergoing final documentation at the Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku before receiving the directive.
The orientation camps are being closed barely one week that corps members were sworn-in for a three-week orientation course.
Some corps members who were loitering around while waiting to be documented, told our correspondent in confident that although they were not comfortable with the way the orientation exercise was cut short abruptly, safe guarding their health was of top priority.
A staff of the NYSC in the state who pleaded not to be named in print as no other person except the DG is expected to speak on the issue, said the corps members would depart the orientation camp immediately they complete the necessary documentation.
The source appealed to corps employers and host communities to be hospitable to corps members and provide the necessary support to enable them settle in, without any form of discrimination in view of the prevailing circumstances occasioned by Covid-19 fears.
However, some traders at the seasonal market located within the camp complained bitterly that the camp was being shut one week after it opened as against the usual three week.
One of the traders simply identified as Nkechi who sells a delicacy of bread, fried egg and noodles complained that she recently stock her makeshift shop with the aim of making brisk business for three weeks.
