Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Chief Great Ogboru

By Onome Oghenetega

The Delta State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Friday dismissed the petition filed by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Great Ogboru challenging the election victory of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

The three-man tribunal panel led by Justice Suleiman Belgore threw out the petition in its entirety for lacking in merit and being able to prove the allegation s that the election was marred by irregularities.

Ogboru had challenged the re-election of Governor  Okowa and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 9, 2019 governorship election.

The tribunal held that the petitioners failed to prove that Okowa was not duly elected by majority of lawful votes cast at the election.

It described Ogboru’s attempt to overturn the victory of Okowa as “opportunistic and gold digging.”
