A popular philanthropist and businessman, Chief Samuel Akpimegi, has promised to give university scholarship to 25 secondary leavers from Ughelli Kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State to further their education.

Chief Akpimegi said the gesture was to support the efforts of governments at all levels towards supporting indigent students who had graduated from secondary but could not afford tertiary education owing to financial constraints.

Speaking with newsmen on Thursday in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state, the Urhobo chief noted that the beneficiaries would be selected from the various villages and towns that made up Ughelli Kingdom.

Akpimegi, who had been giving free school uniforms and prizes to primary and secondary students in the locality, stressed that the scholarship would see beneficiaries of the scholarship from their 100-level to their final year in any course of study.

He added that the beneficiaries would also be allowed to choose tertiary institution of their choice.

The businessman, who was honoured by the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, HRM (Dr.) Wilson Ojakovo, Oharisi 111 with the traditional title of ‘Abadi Rode R’ Ovie Ughelli’ in 2017, noted that the idea was his own way of giving back to the society.

He, however, revealed that over sixty – eight (68) under graduates have been sponsored by his foundation, SOAD international, adding that he decided to bring home the scholarship program to benefit indigent students from Ughelli Kingdom.

Chief Akpimegi explained plans of reaching out to different president generals from Ughelli Kingdom as part of his strategy for selecting beneficiaries from the various communities.
