Hoodlums believed to be political thugs have reportedly burnt down a section of the Eleme local government secretariat in Rivers State.
The incident took place few hours after the Inspector General Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetekun announced the withdrawal of his personnel from the 23 council areas in the state.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara had on Sunday sworn in the 23 newly local government chairmen after they were declared winners by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
The newly sworn in council were expected to officially assume office today as democratically elected leaders in their various local government areas.
It was gathered that the chairman of Eleme local government, Hon. Brian Gokpa, who was resuming for duties on Monday had met a section of the council on fire.
The Rivers Police Command was yet to respond to the incident at the time of filing this report.
