The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of last Saturday governorship election in Edo State.
Okpebholo was declared winner of the election by the INEC State Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, on Sunday night.
Prof. Kuta, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, said Okpebholo polled 291,667 votes to emerge winner of the keenly contested governorship election.
According to the results announced, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Asue Ighodalo, came second after scoring 247,274 votes.
Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, came a distant third after polling 22,763 votes.
Prof. Kuta declared, “That Okpebholo, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”
Okpebholo secured victory in 11 local government areas while his rival, Ighodalo won in seven LGAs in the state.
Menawhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the outcome of the election.
