The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Delta State, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, has faulted the judgement of the Supreme Court which affirmed the election of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Gbagi, who expressed his disappointment on the ruling, noted that “the 19th day of January 2024, marks the darkest day in the history” of the state.
Recall that the Supreme Court on Friday upheld the election Governor Oborevwori as the duly elected governor of the state.
Gbagi along Senator Ovie Omo-Agege of the APC and Chief Ken Pela of the LP had challenged the outcome of the governorship election which produced Oborevwori as the winner according to the results announced by INEC.
But Gbagi, a former Minister of State for Education, in a statement said the judgement contravene the provisions of the electoral act.
According to him, “Fellow Deltans, the 19th day of January 2024, marks the darkest day in the history of the people of Delta State.
“The Supreme Court of Nigeria, being the last hope of the people, has decided the more than obvious embarrassing and fraudulent situation in Delta State in what the Republic of Nigeria and particularly Deltans have woken up to see this day.
“The judgment is against the express provisions of the constitution, the Electoral Act and the Guideline and Regulation issued by INEC under which the election was conducted.
“I, as Kenneth O. Gbagi have taken this first stage that has ended with the judgment of the Supreme Court on behalf of Deltans and the good people of Nigeria.”
Gbagi, however, reluctantly congratulated Oborevwori on his Supreme Court victory.
