INEC lifts ban on political campaigns ahead of Saturday’s polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission has lifted the ban on political campaigns ahead of this Saturday rescheduled Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Political parties including the two prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had threatened to continue with with campaigns beginning from Monday since INEC had shifted the polls.

The commission in a statement posted on its verified Twitter handle, and was signed by National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye.

It read, “After consultations with political parties, the Commission has approved that campaigns by parties and candidates can resume forthwith to end by midnight of Thursday, 21st February, 2019.”

INEC had postponed the presidential and National Assembly elections earlier scheduled for February 16 to February 23 citing logistics challenges.
