Elder Godsday Orubebe

By Ovie Okpare

Barely a month after resigning and dumping the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, has been named as the Director-General of the Senator Ovie Omo-Agege Campaign Organisation.

There were strong indications that the Deputy President of the Senate and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has concluded plans to name the former minister as the Director-General of his Campaign Organisation.

NIGER DELTA TODAY reliably learnt that Orubebe’s choice followed a series of meetings with critical stakeholders and leaders ahead of the 2023 governorship election in the state.

Sources close to Orubebe, a minister under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, told our correspondent that Omo-Agege who currently represents Delta Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly could name him before the end of the week.

Orubebe announced that he was dumping the PDP last month in a letter addressed to the National Chairman of the party, Senator lyorchia Ayu.

He cited the emergence of Atiku Abubakar, a northerner, as the party’s presidential candidate for his resignation. He emphasized, in the letter, that it was the turn of the Southern part of Nigeria to produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor.

A week after his resignation, Orubebe announced that he had joined the ruling APC after picking membership card Burutu Ward 3, Burutu Local Government Area, Delta State.

But confiding on NIGER DELTA TODAY on Tuesday, a top chieftain of the party from Delta South confirmed that Orubebe and others have been penciled down for the job for the Deputy President of the Senate.

Our sources disclosed that Orubebe enjoyed the support of most Delta APC leaders especially owing to his cult following from his Ijaw speaking tribe in the state.

It was further gathered that the former minister was already talking to several aggrieved Delta PDP leaders to join the APC.

“Yes, His Excellency, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has tentatively picked Elder Godsday Orubebe as DG of his campaign organization. They have been talking but there are other persons whose names are also featured on the list. I am certain that our APC governorship candidate will name Orubebe possibly this week as DG”, one of our sources stated.
