Eighteen persons have been rescued from the site of the collapsed church building belonging to Salvation Ministries in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
All of the rescued victims are said to be alive and were currently receiving treatment in yet-to-be identified hospitals in the state capital.
The spokesman of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development to NIGER DELTA TODAY Online in a telephone interview.
He said no death has been recorded at the time of the interview and filing of this report.
Among those rescued, are children and adults, Edafe stated.
The church building had collapsed on Tuesday evening during a church service as part of activities marking the church’s 21-day fasting and prayer.
NIGER DELTA TODAY Online reports that the building was said to have caved in through the children session trapping scores of worshippers including children attending the service.
Officials of the Delta State Emergency Management Agency, fire service and the state police command were leading the rescue team.
Sources told our correspondent that many others particularly children were still being trapped under the debris of the collapsed building.
