The Federal Government on Wednesday said the ban on twitter, a social microblogging site, will soon be lifted.
It also stated that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has also reached agreement for Twitter to open an office in Nigeria.
Buhari-led government had suspended Twitter’s operation in the country for over two months.
Twitter’s suspension followed the microblogging site’s decision deleting tweets of President Buhari over his comment on Indigenous People of Biafra.
The Federal Government’s decision to soon reopen Twitter was disclosed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lal Mohammed, on Wednesday.
Mohammed spoke while fielding questions from State House reporters after FEC meeting on latest development on the issue.
The Information Minister said that it has reached an agreement with Twitter in most areas of misunderstanding which resulted in the suspension
According to him, majority of the conditions the government had given to the social media platform has been accepted by Twitter.
He said the areas still pending such as Twitter setting up an office and having a Twitter staff of management cadre that will serve as the country representative, are still being discussed.
The Minister also disclosed that on the issue of a Nigeria-based office, even though Twitter has agreed to the condition, it is, however, maintaining that the earliest it can establish that is 2022.
He expressed confidence that everything will be ironed out with Twitter within “matter days or weeks”, noting the anxiety that has been shown by Nigerians.
He said FG’s committee negotiating with Twitter will meet on the agreement soon to make recommendations.
