Fresh facts emerged on Tuesday why a Beninese court sent the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, back to police detention after hearing on Monday night.

One of the Cotonou, Benin Republic-based lawyers of Sunday Igboho, Ibrahim Salami, confirmed this to BBC on Tuesday.

Salami disclosed that Igboho, whose real name is Sunday Adeyemo, was slammed with new charges by authorities of Benin Republic.

He noted that the new charges were filed when Igboho appeared in court on Monday, after previous allegations that warranted placing Igboho on a watchlist were successfully tackled during the hearing.

The lawyer added that Igboho was further remanded to allow police to conduct a thorough investigation into the charges.

Salami listed the fresh charges as illegal migration, dubious connivance with immigration officers and an attempt to cause civil unrest.

“First, the judge ruled that Sunday Igboho entered into the Benin Republic through an illegal means.

“They also want to investigate how Sunday Igboho conspired with others to enter Benin Republic through wrong means.

“They also want to know how long he has been in Benin republic and his plans in the country. They also raised a charge on whether he wants to come and cause unrest or social disturbance in the Benin Republic,” Salami told BBC.

The lawyer also confirmed that the Federal Government had yet to file formal extradition charges against the Yoruba nation agitator.

He noted that the Nigerian government could not also prove the allegations of arms trafficking, inciting violence that could result in social disturbance and causing disunity.
