Nigerian Govt Approves Bill To Extend Retirement Age For Teachers

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government has extended the retirement age for teachers in the country from the current 60 years to 65 years. 

The retirement age was raised following a bill approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday. 

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this on Wednesday at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) chaired by President Buhari. 

The bill, Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers Bill, 2021, was approved by the FEC and to be forwarded to the National Assembly for consideration and possible approval.

Adamu told journalists that the bill also seeks to give legal backing to new measures by the current administration to enhance the teaching profession in the country. 

The bill if approved, the Minister explained, will raise retirement age of teachers from 60 years to 65 while the years of service will also move from 35 to 40.

Adamu said some highlights of the bill include the introduction of bursary award, special rural posting allowances and other measures to attract the best brains to the profession.
