Nursing Mother, 15 Other Passengers Feared Dead In Two Delta Accidents

A nursing mother of two-month-old baby and about 15 other passengers have been reportedly killed in two separate accidents in Delta State. 

It was gathered that both crashes occurred on Tuesday. 

The accident that reportedly claimed the lives of about 15 travellers occurred at Alifekede community along the Agbor axis of the busy Benin-Asaba-Onitsha highway between a luxurious bus and a Toyota sienna. 

Our correspondent gathered that the accident was caused by the Toyota Sienna which was driving against traffic. 

The bus was said to have crushed the sienna car while trying to avoid a head-to-head collision claiming the lives of five persons on the spot. 

“The sienna was plying one way when suddenly the luxury bus which was on the right of way, ran into it, causing pandemonium,” a source stated. 

It was learnt that other passengers in auto crash were brought out unconscious and rushed to a nearby hospital where about ten of them were confirmed dead.

Sympathisers and operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were said to have been involved in the rescue operations.

Head of Operations of the Delta State Command of the FRSC, Mr. Bakare Fatai Adesina, confirmed the incident but could not give further details as at the time of filing this report. 

However, the accident involving the nursing mother happened along the popular DLA road in Asaba, Delta State capital. 

 The woman was said to have been crushed to death by a suspected ‘yahoo Boy’ who was on top speed in the newly constructed DLA road. 

 The yet-to-be identified nursing mother was walking on the pedestrian walkway when the suspect’s vehicle veered off the road to hit her. 

She was returning from where she had gone to buy bread when the 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster ran her over with a Toyota Corolla car.

The victim, who died instantly, had her skull smashed against a nearby fence along the street. 

When contacted, Delta Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the death of the nursing mother. 

She said the suspect had been arrested with his car impounded.
