Popular Nigerian music legend, Majek Fashek, is dead

The Africa reggae king reportedly died in New York at the aged of 71.

The musician who had been in and out of hospital in recent times reportedly gave up the ghost on Monday in the United States.

His manager, Omenka Uzoma, confirmed the passage of the musician in the early hours of Tuesday on his Instagram handle.

Uzoma wrote, “Today been having pressure calls, well it is true that the African No 1 Legendary ICON has gone to be with the LORD his Maker,” he said.

“Let celebrate him, his achievements, and his family, whatever decisions made by his immediate family will be notified.”

Majek Fashek, whose birth name is Majekodunmi Fasheke, was born in Benin, Edo State capital, to an Edo mother and a Ijesha father

He was one of Nigeria’s surviving Reggae music legend and did several collaborations with international acts including Tracy Chapman, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, and Beyoncé.

Majek Fashek also known as Rain Maker, his Prisoner Conscience 1988 album, which included the multiple award-winning single “Send Down the Rain” won both local and international awards for his music.

The singer also played a supporting role in the 2000 Nollywood movie ‘Mark of the Beast’.
